Spring Cleaning Your Big Green Egg: A Simple Guide

Spring is the perfect time to give your Big Green Egg a little TLC before the grilling season gets into full swing. Here’s a quick and easy guide to get your Egg clean, checked, and ready to cook like a champ.

1. Clear Out the Ash

After every few cooks, ash can start to build up. Use your ash tool through the draft door to pull out the old ash into a metal container. For a deeper clean, remove the inner ceramic pieces and clear out any hidden ash behind the firebox using your tool or a shop vac.

2. Tidy Up the Cooking Grid

Give the cooking grid a good scrape with a grill brush or a nylon bristle grid scrubber. For extra tough buildup, soak the grid in warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly.

3. Burn Off Buildup

If your Egg has been idle for a while, it’s a good idea to burn off any leftover residue and moisture. Start by heating it to around 250°F for 1–2 hours. Then load fresh lump charcoal and bring it up to 600°F for 2–3 hours for a full refresh.

4. Check the Gaskets

Inspect the gasket around the dome and the top vent. If you notice fraying, leaks, or gaps, it might be time for a replacement. A fresh gasket ensures a proper seal and better temperature control.

5. Wipe Down the Outside

Keep your Egg looking its best with a simple wipe-down using a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners—water is usually all you need for the ceramic exterior.

6. Check Moving Parts

Make sure the top and bottom vents open and close easily. If they’re sticky or rusted, give them a good cleaning or consider replacing them. Also, check bolts and fasteners for tightness and alignment.

7. Use a Cover

Protect your investment with a breathable Big Green Egg cover to keep dust, pollen, and weather away when not in use.
